The infusion can be delivered on an outpatient basis by a surgically implanted pump (Infusaid) connected to the hepatic artery. Although the response rate is high, increased survival has not yet been proven. Hepatic artery 5-FUDR given through a catheter inserted through the skin into an artery in the arm or groin also has a high response rate. This method isolates the blood supply to the cancer and then releases chemotherapy into the isolated area. There may be local toxicity, including liver function abnormalities and biliary tract scarring (sclerosis).
